Periodontics in Oklahoma City, OK

Periodontics focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease. At J. Russell Danner, DDS, our dentist uses the latest techniques and specializes in preventing, diagnosing, and treating gum disease.

Periodontal diseases are infectious diseases that affect the gums and soft and hard tissues surrounding the teeth. This includes the alveolar bone, periodontal ligaments, and gingiva. Periodontal diseases are often the result of poor oral hygiene, resulting in plaque and tartar buildup, which irritates the gums and causes them to pull away from the teeth.

What Are the Different Types of Periodontal Treatments We Offer?

The periodontal treatments we offer at our office include:

Bone Grafting

When a tooth is extracted or lost due to trauma, the jawbone in that area is no longer stimulated. As a result, the bone deteriorates over time.

Bone grafting is a procedure that helps restore the bone. A bone grafting material, such as bone particles, collagen, or synthetic bone material, is placed in the area of the extracted tooth. This material helps to stimulate the bone and prevent it from receding over time.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing are deep cleaning procedures that are often performed together. They are designed to remove plaque and tartar buildup in the periodontal pockets that are below the gum line. The dentist will use special instruments to clean and smooth out the roots in order to remove plaque and tartar.

Gingivectomy

Gingivectomy is a type of periodontal treatment that is used to remove excess gum tissue. This treatment is often done when you have excessive amounts of gum tissue and/or gum recession, which is when your gums pull back from the tooth.

Flap Surgery

Flap surgeries are often used to treat advanced stages of periodontitis. The surgery is performed when the patient has severe symptoms, including extensive gum damage, inflammation, and tissue loss. During the surgery, the gum is lifted and folded back, which allows the dentist to access the roots of the teeth. Then, the gums are sutured back in place.

Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR)

Guided tissue regeneration is a procedure designed to treat gum recession caused by gum disease. The treatment is typically recommended when a patient has moderate to severe gum recession.

Osseous Surgery

Osseous surgery is a procedure that can be performed when gum disease has advanced to the point of no return. A flap of gum tissue is removed from the affected area, allowing the specialist to remove diseased tissue and smooth the roots to discourage reinfection.

Soft Tissue Grafting

Soft tissue grafting is a treatment that is used to repair minor damage to your gums. The treatment involves taking tissue from elsewhere in your mouth and grafting it onto your gums. This helps the gum tissue that has been lost due to periodontal disease regenerate.
